I have stripped back the wood on my stair banister and have found that they have used two types of wood. The spindles are made of pine and the handrails and newl posts are a darker wood. If I stain or varnish them with a dark stain will i get an even finish or should I just repaint them white.
I don't want to waste time and money so I thought I would ask you guys.
Thanks in advance.

Many handrails are left unpainted - sand smooth and dress with teak-oil gives a nice finish. Dirty hands on the rail leave sticky dirt especially if children or a man is about and oiled wood is easier to spruce-up than painted wood.
Most spindles and newel posts are painted - it doesn't all have to be the same i.e. all wood or all painted but if you do leave any wood exposed teak-oil will vastly improve the overall look and finish - prices vary widely £4 - £16 per litre - shop around. Gloss paint gives reflections and highlights any dents - satin finish looks classier and dries quicker but that's my predjdice showing

If you use a water based stain then you can control the intensity of the shade by applying more coats. This may give u what you want with the advantage of being water based. So if you dont like the result it will recoat with water based gloss/matt without any problems.
