I think I've cracked it. Reset machine using "easy setup" and it seems to be OK. Software version is now V1.01.08CE? Thanks everyone and hopefully I will not be posting tomorrow.

Page 101 of the user manual has instructions for resetting the recorder, otherwise known as 'Easy Setup.'
Download from here if you don't have one:

Still at work (sigh) so I haven't tried it myself yet.

I've also had the same problem with my Sony RDR-HXD560 since 03/11/08, just power's off after the welcome screen. Notice also that my firmware version is at 1.00.01CE, I'm sure it was at 1.00.09CE last time I looked.
Might be a dumb question but how can the 'faulty firmware update' correct itself if the recorder won't stay switched on?

This is remarkable. I have a RDR HXD860 which has the same fault which started at 21:00, 03-11-08. Could this be the same firmware problem and if so when is the fix coming?

Just been into Sony shop it is a nationwide problem that has been caused by a faulty firmware update transmiited nationally. I was told keep trying and it should fix itself but so far no luck.12.35 04112008
