Calibrate Crane & viceroy radio watch?

How do I calibrate V&C watch after fitting new battery. The second hand does not go further than numeral ten when I follow the manual instructions.

Philip J's post is the one. The whole mechanism just lifts out, allowing you to access the battery. Discharge the capacitor by shorting the negative batterey conenction to the recessed contact in the middle.
One point: the CR2020 battery's that many of these use are pretty much no longer available. I used a CR2016, this is working fine albeit a little loose fitting.

Instructions for "On-Time Talking Atomic" watch, which sounds familiar to what you are dealing with: http://cdn.lssproducts.com/downloads/101006%20Talking%20Atomic%20Watch%20Instructions11032009.pdf

I have a C & V r/c watch and the re-calibration after a new battery has been fitted is fairly simple. Press the top button for 3 secs then wait till all hands are at 12 o Clock. The hands go round very quickly so stop then by a quick press on top button just after 11 59 and fine adjust by quick presses on top button. Don't forget to confirm by pressing middle button immediately. Then call the radio signal by pressing buttions 1 and 3 simultaneously then wait.

Replacing the battery and resetting:

1. Turn the watch over and place it face down on a soft cloth. Remove the four screws and the plastic back.
2. Using a fine pair of forceps (I have a selection of those stainless steel ones) remove the rubber o-ring that seals the case and gently tease out the movement from the case. You can replace the battery without removing the movement but I found it easier if it was out of the case; however you have to be very careful to avoid damaging the hands.
3. Place the movement face down on a flat surface; I used a block of cork. Make sure 12-o’clock on the watch is away from you at 12-o’clock.
4. Unclip the battery retaining spring at the 6-o’clock position and tease out the battery towards you using forceps. Temporarily remove the label that tells you to make sure of the battery polarity is +ve up and to short out the battery –ve terminal and the “ATM” (presumably automatic timing mechanism) otherwise you can't see what you are doing.
5. Using the forceps short out the battery –ve terminal, which is a flat leaf spring with 3 prongs at about 4/5-o’clock in the battery compartment and the ATM, which is a recessed small metal button in the very centre of the compartment. If you don’t do this you won’t be able to get the second hand fast-running and it will do one circuit and then stop.
6. Replace the battery (+ve up) and the label. Gently replace the movement in the case; there is a small notch at 12-o’clock that aligns it. Replace the label and the o-ring and screw on the back making sure the o-ring is in its groove.
7. Turn the watch over face-up. Press and hold the S1 button (top right button) until the second hand start to run quickly and then release it. Wait until the hour hand is on 12-o’clock and the minute hand is about 0:59 and press S1 again. The second hand will stop. Briefly press S1 and the second hand will advance a second at a time. Do this until all 3 hands are at 12-o’clock. DON’T GO PAST, or you will have to start again.
8. Press S4 (lower left button) to confirm. The LCD then comes up with the time zone and city etc. The rest is in the instructions and the watch should pick up the time signal and reset itself. The important bit is to short out the mechanism and to get all 3 hands to 12-o'clock.

After an unsuccessful attempt at trying to short the watch it was left for another attempt. when I tried to do so I discovered that the digital display was gone and the hands on 12. I brought up the second hand to12 and "Hey Presto" it sorted itself out. Now working satisfactorily. Thanks for help

After weeks of frustration following the fitting of the new battery at a jeweller who could not reset the watch, it is now working again!

Thank you for the hint about removing the battery and discharging the watch with a pair of tweezers - worked first time. Brilliant.

I had the same problem. I discovered a small label in my watch that says, when the battery is removed, short out the -ve battery spring terminal to the ATM movement, this is the part of the watch in the centre of the lower part of battery holder, it has a small access hole through some clear insulator material. You need to pull up the battery spring a bit to see this. It says to use tweezers to short it out. This discharges the watch circuit and resets it.
After this the instructions for setting all hands to the 12o'clock position work OK. Once this is done all works OK and the time zone etc can be set properly.
Hope this helps.

If you have lost the instructions contact C & V on 01279 757100 or Coopers of Stortford on 0844 482 4400.
I have the instructions and managed to restart the watch after replacing the battery. It is a bit tricky and time consuming. It is a pity the watches do not start and synchronize automatically as do my radio controlled clocks.

I have managed to obtain the instructions, and have fitted the new battery, and YES it works now. If David W or anyone else would like these, post a reply here. It didn't work the 1st time but the 2nd time it did and it's the right time zone and the date, year is right too.

Hi David S

I am in the same situation, having just replaced the battery but have managed to mislay the original instructions. My problem is that I need to have it working on mid European time - I successfully did it last time, but without the instructions I'm lost. Did you get any replies to your original post?
