I have read the 'trouble shooting' page in the users manual and it seems to point to the Microswitch, mentioned a number of times in these very helpful questions and answers, problem for me is... I can't find the Microswitch! I have a breakdown (fig 1) of all parts but it doesn't mention it! Is it called something else in the illustration? Am I missing something. Can someone help me find the Microswitch?

My hubby and I have gone mad repairing this boiler with either the diaphragm bring replcaed or thermo costing us an arm and leg each time. I've read this forum and hey presto two hard smacks to the top left and up and running dented the husbands ego but wot the hell happy days. Those who added the useful advise well done and humble thank u. I will now have clean and dry knickers again ;-)

Hi
I would just like to say thanks to this forum i have just gone through all the replies and we have just used the advice from madrigaul and the boiler now works a treat!!!!
The problem was no hot water only on CH.
Took out the microswitch gave it a 30 sec blowout and it now works fine.

i have just had the problem with ravenheat combi not firing up on hot water only, phoned ravenheat tech services who told me to check the micro switch on the diverter valve. got home from work and did what they told me to do and bingo it worked.something that the service engineer couldnt do even after 6 visits.so if you have a problem with your boiler check with tech services first, they have the better knowledge.

I had exactly the same problem. It was the fan modulating pcb board, a small board situated nesr the main board. Cost of board is approx. £25

most probably the timer. The relay inside not making a contact. You can test by bypassing it. there should be a twin grey wire connector on the main board. remove it and bridge the connections on the board with a paperclip or similar. if the boiler fires it was the timer.

Have a Ravenheat boiler .. been fitted for about 4 years .. no problems for the first 2 years but then have had continual problems since then .. after paying for a few repairs and parts we signed up for British Gas Homecare and have had to call them out numerous times .. they have replaced every possible part but the problem has never been fully resolved for any length of time .. intermittent fault where the hot water only works when the CH is switched on .. when CH off we either only get luke warm water or the boiler fails to fire up at all. Occasioanlly the boiler will fail to fire up at all. British Gas coming tomorrow to replace the diverter valve and heat exchange unit (parts which were replaced once about a year ago!) .. we also have a constant leak which several engineers have claimed to fix but to no avail!! Engineer today tried to tell me that when they replace the parts they will check the quality of the water in the system and if no good we will need to flush the system and add some sort of magnetic valve to the system, for which they will charge us £250 .. he said this may be the cause of the repeated problem .. is he talking rubbish and trying the get some money out of us?

Ravenheat finally fixed it raised flue turned radiator heat to min and then changed the timing on the firing up to fire up in under 10 seconds so when the hot tap was turned on it fired up and did not go on to lock out which apparently it does after 15 seconds

My 84E has just got the 7 year itch!
If we turned hot water tap on full, we got ice. Ideal if you need waking up! Eventually, we lost heat and water (all). Got British Gas out on their £164 deal (repair regardless of labour & parts) and they said it's probably the board. Which board? Something to do with relays. Narrowed it down to this: When heating is ok, we turned down the ch knob and when we turned it up again (next day), the radiators started to warm, then the heating died again. Any clues? By the way, I will chase up British Gas, for isn't a 'board' a part? And should they be replacing a faulty part?

we have had 3 combi boilers in 12 years each one develops faults with no CH or HW some expell all the water others just refuse to fire up. Our current boiler is Raven heat we have had every part available even a new flue, but still the boiler shuts down everytime the HW is turned on and also intermittenly when it feels like it any ideas Ravenheat haven't got any they have been out twice it still isn't working

Ravenheat CSI Primary - intermittent fault where the "Flame Failure" light comes on. Finally traced the fault to a partially blocked pilot light jet. This jet is located in the base of the pilot light, remove the gas pipe (m10 spanner) and the jet falls out. It has two very small holes for gas to pass through, clean with a fine nylon brush (your wifes toothbrush should do it) or compressed air. Since cleaning mine, working like new.

To all you wonderful people who suggested giving the boiler a good thump -THANKS! Not only have I got the thing working again but it was a truly wonderful experience, which I tried to add to by giving the hateful swine another working over, only to find I'm too old now and couldn't kick high enough.

Mine wouldnt fire up, the pilot light came on then there was a clicking sound, after about 5-10 seconds the pilot went out again. After hitting it and twiddliing with all the wires it evenyually started but then cut out again. I kept trying the same routine for about half an hour and eventually it came on. I've left it on now for a few days, so fingers crossed.

Hi thanks for the reply, I discovered last night that is I turn the hot water on full from off instead of partially on, it fires up and heats the water albeit luke warm. Had a shower this morning adopting the same approach, turned it on full, fired up, luke warm shower. Now it wont fire up at all even if I turn the tap on full. I think its taking the p*ss out of me ;)

Recently looked at a friend`s RSF84et . Not firing up
relays clicking no fan & no flame red led lighting.
Plummer had advised a new pcb was required at about £200 . Found out be trial & error (no circiut diagram)
that first relay closes & pump starts 2-3 secs later another click & centre relay closes this is supose to operate top fan motor but wasn`t .cause of fault centre relay closing but no AC being switched.

cured by removing relay with soldering iron & braid.using small flat blade removed black plastic cover cleaned & retension of contacts refitted now working ok no £200, no parts replaced , very happy friend !!

My Ravenheat ls80 has a similar problem. The CH works fine but just today the hot water stopped working completely. I have tinkered to do a little trial and error. I found that if I unplug the CH thermister nothing works at all, plugged back in CH works (no HW). When the DHW thermister is plugged in or unplugged it doesnt work (CH works). When I turn the tap on the fan kicks in but the pilot light doesnt.

I am going to try and fit new thermisters tomorrow but any ideas other that hitting it very hard it specific places?

Yes a punch on the top right of boiler tends to do the trick but it is not 'necessarily' the thermostat or thermister? as I have just discovered on my 7 year old RSF84e unit! On my boiler it turned out to be the air pressure switch which is above the thermostat at the top right of boiler which is very sensitive to the air flow through the boiler to prevent you getting CO poisoning. If you think this could be the fault and you are a "competent" d.i.y.er then first check your fan is operational and the flue is not blocked with a birds nest or any other debris which would restrict air flow and cause the air valve to shut down the boiler like it is supposed to! A new one is easy to fit. First isolate power and remove front outer casing then the front inner boiler casing which has approx 12 scews taking care not to damage rope fibre air seal as you lift away (seal should stay contained in the recess in the cover) Air switch is now visible and accessable at top right of unit. Remove and replace, making sure you have a good seal on the tube that connects to the flue and the 3 electrical spade fittings go back on the corresponding terminals. Better still a qualified Plumber should be able to do it in around 30minutes or so if he is honest he should not bill you too much...hmmmm? The switch itself costs £30 to £60 ish depending on model/part No. NB Please dont attempt to do this yourself if your not competent.

Just laughed so hard i cried after trying for ages to fire it up we thumped the top right & it started in seconds!!!!!!

Warm again!!!
December 2009
Same symptoms as many others; 4 year old CSI85T boiler no hot water or heating. Tried tappng it as others have stated and wiggling yellow wires - no luck. Tempory solution was to switch off, drop timeswitch contol panel forward (it hinges) and switch on again. Boiler goes througn all usual relay clicks, then fires up. Will ring Raven heat tomorrow as I think this is a new PCB needed - it will be one of the relays as these are the only moving part. Hope this helps someone.

sounds like the central heating thermister, which is on the right hand side, your best bet is to get the new thermister which just clips on the pipe no need to drain the system,

check the diverter valve pin is moving in and out and making contact with the microswitch which changes the operation from heating to hot water and visa versa, its at the bottom of the boiler with the pipework going into it, looks like a regulator, disc ish in the middle. (has a diagphram inside which splits preventing the pin moving making contact)

I have a 4 year old Ravenheat LS 80 (T). Mine was refusing to fire up for hot water or central heating. (not ideal). With a series of quite un-scientific poking and prodding i have managed to get it functioning as it should. Turned out that a good wiggle of the central heating sensor/thermistor wires solved the problem. These are a pair of yellow wires going into the pipe just down from the overheat thermostat. I would like to know if possible where Alan who also posted a response this month, got his thermistors from "at £3.50 each". Answers on a postcard to peterrobinson211@hotmail.com would be gratefully recieved. Hope this is helpful to someone. Thanks.

Mine was the time clock , two wires (both grey) on contacts 3&5 , rearranged the wiring so the clock was by-passed and hey presto both hot water and heating albiet on constant fo now. new timer required but at least its close to being repaired and cost me nowt so far. If the boiler works fine on HW but dead as a dod on heating try the clock connection but only if you are confident with electrics and have the original userbook with the wiring diagram to refer to , good luck anyway

Quite possibly just a thermistor - I had a problem with intermittent hot water from a LS100T - solved by replacing the CH thermistor, not the DHW one! I would replace bother CH and DHW thermisters (I found them at £3.50 each). You need to drain the boiler (not the whole system), which is a piece of cake.

A common fault in these boilers is the air pressure switch sticking. Somewhere near the top right corner, inside the firebox, there's a small diaphram connected to a microswitch. (Top left on LS series I think). This switch is made by Honeywell, and can either be replaced, about £20 on ebay, or taken out and worked a bit. It only has 35 millibar to switch with normally, so a bit of dust or tightness can stop it switching. If you take it out, then fairly gently blow and suck into the white tube, you should hear it click. Give it a 30 second blow/suck workout, and it should go on for a few months, or years if you're lucky. Incidentally, THIS is the valve that Ravenheat ask you to bang the case to operate. NOT the injectors!

Got exactly the same problem with my boiler. It is just over a year old and I have spent more hours fixing it then it has working! I have no water or heat and now going through the process of checking everything. I,m guessing it will be the thermo in the boiler stopping it from working.

Hi, I came across this question on a general hunt for what the hell could have gone wrong with my ravenheat boiler. It heated the radiators fine, but not the water - unless the radiators were already on.
I found various solutions, including smacking it hard (more than happy to do that one), switches, three-way valves and all kinds.
I eventually just bit the bullet and got a very reputable plumber in...he opened it up....looked at it for 5 seconds and said "it's your thermistor" (possibly mis-spelt).
He was right as well - £20 part, £40 to fit it - now working a treat.

I have the same problem but no heating nor hot water. A phone call to the service department told me to turn on the hot water, give it three slaps at the top. It works every time. Another phone call back to Ravensheat and the service desk told me to clean out the air pressure switch or worst case replace it and we would not have to slap the boiler again! Hmmm!

My boiler wouldn't fire up for CH or hot water. I telephoned Ravenheat on 01132527007. They said it sounded like the injector was blocked. They told me to turn on the hot tap and give my boiler a good, hard thump at the top right hand side!! Well it worked, it was fixed in about 3 seconds!
