How can i get it to work?

The Digilogic VCR/ DVD Comi Model no DVDVCR2 was set to go with a dvd in it with no problem, when we then tried to play it, whichever button you pressed either on the machine or on the remote, the word SAFE appears on the display. We connot eject the dvd, so we tried to play a video tape, that too is now stuck. There is no mention of the word SAFE in the manual. We have tried switching it off, even for several hours. Can any one help please. Derek. Thanks
