Thanks for posting this!!!!! It helped so very much.
My handles on the 5 year old Kenmore side by side (106-54563300) were so loose that the top wiggled and the bottom finally came off.
After reading in this thread how to remove the handle and work the clips holding the fastening screw, I simply used an alan wrech to tighten the screws and reattched the door handle.
Worked like a charm!

Yes, hitting from the bottom pushes the handle up. The door mounts have a spring-like part that can be pressed back towards the door so the handle screw will pass over it easier. If the handle has pulled away from the door enough you can use a flat head screw driver to push this part back and lift the handle up and off. Tighten loose handle screw(s), position and slide snap handle onto the door. It should be flush now. See owner's manual for the style 2 handle removal picture.

tap hard! from bottom of handle. Handle moves up then off. Tighten screws. Tap handle back from top of handle.
