1800 zetec alternator?

im having trouble removing the alternator, quite painfull actually, but now im reading things about a faulty circuit. anyone know?

symptoms were as follows:
started car as normal, then heared a high pitched whistle/whine (something being belt driven), a smell of burning electrics. soon after noise stopped, but battery light on dash came on. from experience this means alternator has gone and car is running on battery power, but i just want to be sure.
its a mondeo 1999 1800 zetec petrol
