toyota corolla jammed ignition switch barrel - 1998 1.6 Corolla CD auto?

ignition key will only turn part way to ACC position and no further. handbook says turn key to ACC and then with sprung loaded plunger pressed in, withdraw the barrel. I suspect that unless the key is at ACC then the slots/grooves do not line up to withdraw the barrel - does this sound correct or is there something else I need to do first? There is a small electrical component on the top of the lock housing not mentioned in the Haynes manual (crap) but do not see how to remove that or if that is related to not getting out the barrel.

Any experts out there - advice gratefully received.

Keith - how did you remove the rivets? I need to remove the barrel to take out broken pins in the lock

I am having a similar problem with my main key, but the spare always works perfectly, so went to get a new one cut. Apparently it has a chip in it and so I wonder if it's actually the chip that has stopped working as this is what allows you to turn the engine over - without a chip you can only unlock doors and steering. Just a thought .....

hi answer to my own question - after 2 days fiddling - -but cheap and cheerful solution.
It seems the lock barrel only with 2 keys is approx £260 with setting keys to the transponder best avoided by me if possible,
As the plunger did not depress far enough to remove barrel, drilled the plunger out, having removed steering lock assembly by drilling out the shear bolt heads (you can get these out with a punch by punching round the heads to take out the 2 bolts). The lock has anoth 2 rivets holding the face plate th the barrel outer case and a small pin at the bottom through a lug. Once these are out the barrel comes out - my problem was the one of the tumbler springs had come dislodged. Took out the 2 pawls for that tumbler slot and the springs which just leaves a 7 lever lock, perfectly ok does not really affect the security as the imobiliser covers this. Back together ok.
Toyotas are good cars but the cost of some parts is ridiculous.
