Virus has stopped my computer connecting to the internet?

I have a Dell Lattitude D600 laptop computer with XP that picked up a virus from a christmas card. The computer will not now connect to the internet. the virus seems to have removed the IP address. I have removed and reloaded the broadband software but this has had no effect. Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated. I had the latest version of Norton on the computer but the virus manged to get through the Norton protection.

Try (on another computer of course) going to www.portableapps.com where you can download a version of firefox that you can run on a USB stick. You can then use the USB stick to get back online with the faulty computer and go to the site of any software you want to reinstall, including your usual browser, and download and reinstall it.

Before do as Angela has suggested you need to get rid of the virus. Bootup in safe mode and perform a virus scan

Try running a system restore first and then a full virus scan. If then resinstalling your modem/ internet software still doesn't solve the problem then you may have to run an OS repair. I suspect that the problem is likely to be a corruption in the browser software but if you can't connect to the internet then you can't reinstall it online. Running an OS repair from you original XP disk would fix this though. Come back if you need instructions on how to do any of that.
