Hotpoint WMA62 Drum intermittantly sticking?

Hi,

My Hotpoint WMA62 has a problem with the drum, you can turn the drum by hand then it just stops, almost as if it has come up against something to stop it revolving.
If you then turn it back a litlle then go forward it overcomes the obstacle but a few turns later it stops it again.
The problem appears (but i aint sure) to be between the drum and the outer drum casing.
Although i have heard of carbon brush problems i dont believe it to be a problem with the motor...but i dont know...plz help

I have now spoken to Hotpoint about this problem and was greeted with no surprise at all!
I can confirm that you can get the appropriate spares for ÂŁ25 which include the bearing and also the seals - which are presumably the root of the problem. However, I estimate that it would take most of a day or a weekend to sort this out yourself, provided that nothing else has gone wrong.
Hotpoint will fix the problem, whatever it is for ÂŁ89.11 including parts, labour and call-out fee (this is on a machine still with its parts warrantee intact)
So, despite it being an apparent design flaw and ultimately Hotpoints fault, for the sake of ÂŁ65, they can have the hassle.

My identical machine has just done the same thing. Lots of clonking accompanied witha load of rust stained water from the back. I've taken the top off the machine to determine that its come from the drum rather than anywhere else.
If a bearing is only ÂŁ25 or so, I'm empted to fix it myself, but I'm interested to know from Chrisso how hard it was to get the drum out. And where do you get the part?

Sounds very much like the problem I have. I have just dismantled the entire machine and removed the drum and found that the main bearing at the back of the drum has let in water, rusted and subsequently shattered.
The symptoms are identical so I presume you also need a new bearing.

Apparently, Hotpoint machines carry a 5 year parts warranty and will replace free of charge, but I'm not sure yet if you MUST pay their labour. A new bearing is only about 25 quid, but I found fitting it may be well difficult - there may be an easier way, I don't know.

Could be that a sock or some other small item of clothing stuck between the drum and tub.

Forgot to mention, that when its in use, the drum sometimes works on wash (mainly because i think it goes back and forth) but when we come to spin cycle it just stops. You can hear the motor wanting to drive it but resistance is too great.
