Zanussi WJD1457W E20 during rinse cycle?

During the rinse cycle when water should be draining from the washing machine you hear continuous beeping and E20 flashes on the display. The only way you can continue is to drain the washing machine manually. The filter has been checked (accessible from the front) and all the bits cleaned out of the filter. All of the internal drainage pipes have been checked and cleared of any bits (found a few pieces of straw from our washing basket). Ran a test cycle and the washing machine still comes up with E20 during rinse cycle. Removed the external drainage pipe from the U-bend waste pipe, still get error E20, however, if you keep the external waste pipe at floor level water drains out and the rinse cycle works without errors. It is as if the waste pump doesn't have enough power to force the water out of the washing machine. Please can anybody help? Thank you.

My ZWD1271 has the E20 error on entering the drain/spin cycle.
There is water present in the drum but the front drain is clean & clear.

Decided to tilt the machine on it's side (not laying down) placed a concrete block under it just in case & massaged the black drain hose that is between the drain pump & the drum (bottom right side). I then ran a drying cycle & it again hit E20. Pulled out the front grey draining tube & let that drain out as it went through the cycle. This produced 2 washing up bowls of water but allowed the cycle to complete.

I then checked the drain clearing point & found the problem - a small sock.
Obviously this was stuck further up the pipe & the squeezing dislodged it enough to release it.

Hopefully that has done it, it's now on a test wash cycle...

I use to open the drain/filter, and fill the machine "wrong way" with water through the drainhose. It´s an easy and fast way to do it :)

I had the same problem with a neighbours machine. Cleaned out pump and also took off the big black pipe connected to the drum. I found a plastic ball in this. Not sure if it was meant to be there and have kept it just in case. Machine now working perfectly.
Anyone else ever come across this?

Hi have had this same problem a few times but always cleared the drain pump and all was fine. This time the drain pump screw is stuck, it just turns round and round like the thread isn't catching properly, it is almost out so water comes out but jus won't go that final turn!!!

Any ideas?

Wow , I did this and found a tiny plastic Hama bead lodged in the pump blades so it wouldn't turn . It now works ! I found the drum a swine to drain as most tubs too shallow to catch most of the water . In the end a managed to bend a foil takeaway container around the outlet to catch the water

Thanks for all the information for the E20 error information. Mine too was a blockage but not in the filter but the black pipe that goes from the bowl to the filter. THere where 2 bits of plastic in there, with lint created a partial blockage/restriction.

Thanks again all who have posted.

We've had the same problem...nearly bought a new washing machine. Hubby just had a look around under neath the machine...there's a black tuble with a steal rod that closes it under there that he opened up and low and behold there was a stock and a lolly pop stick stuck in it. Hope this helps...not very technically worded...good luck : )

Hi there, had the same problem, found this forum and followed HandyAndy2's advice, couldn't see anything stuck immediately apart from a bit of fluff, reached it with a fork and it turned out to be a broken zip which was stopping the impeller from turning. Removed and all good! Thanks all.

I have an electrolux, with the e20 error. when it drained it seamed to produce a good gush of water but often produced E20 as an error and the problem was getting worse. when you looked in where the filter goes you can actually see the impeller was clear from foreign matter.

The reason for the error was the thermal circuit breaker on the pump motor had a bunch of corrosion on it, I did the bad thing and just soldered over it (closed circuit) and this fixed the problem, a better fix would be to get a replacement part. (it wasn't the same type as mentioned in the previous posts)

It should be noted that all internal parts of the machine were clean and free from visible corrosion and rust, but as soon as I got the motor out and saw the terminals to that little breaker it was plainly obvious that this was the fault.

I had this problem fixed it yesterday. Turned the machine on it's side removed the spring clip to the pump and found a bra wire and what looked like a tissue in the pump. I checked the filter first but that was clear as I clean it regularly. I could only access the pump through the bottom of the machine after unscrewing the two screws at the bottom. Great post

Thank you very much for all the solutions.
Okay it was a mess to solve it, but it saved me 50 euro's

I have a 6145 from Zanussi.
The problem was two wooden sticks in the drain pump.

I had the same problem with the e20. I had to call on a 24hr plumber doctor. He replaced the pump and all in all it cost us 80 euros. The Zanussi machine is 5 years old. All ok now. He found a hairgrip and a tissue stuck inside the machine.

Thanks for the advice on this - our Zanussi washer dryer started stopping mid cycle, both wash and dry, sometimes with E90, sometimes E20. Following the advice above about accessing the pump via the filter "hatch" I found a rubber band wrapped round the pump - now all is well !! Thanks All

I've had this problem for a while now tried all the solutions from here. I even took the pump out and reset the thermal switch. The impeller wasn't stuck and no blockage as I'm able to empty the water manualy.
Is it possible that the pump needs replacing?

Just to say that I found this forum because I had the same fault/symptoms and based on the suggestions listed, it took me 5 minutes to rectify.
Thought I'd share.....
I drained most of the water out (at floor level with a bowl). Tipped the machine back so that it was on an angle. Unscrewed the front pump filter access and removed it. There was still a small amout of water in the chamber which I mopped out using paper towels so that the actual pump impeller was visible. I could then see some sort of blockage (which turned out to be a couple of girls hair 'bobbles'). removed the blockage, refitted the front filter, switched to a short rinse and spin to test and hey presto....all is good!

Yes it's the pump BUT!

ELECTRICITY CAN KILL, TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAREFUL

PROBLEM
There is a thermal switch inside the pump and this corrodes even after a year. If the filter is blocked the the pump has to work harder and so heats up (a lot). This switch is prone to staying open once it trips out.

SOLUTION
Isolate machine from mains and water supply.
Empty machine with drain hose and bucket at floor level.
Clean Filter out.
Turn machine on its side.
Remove electrical connections from pump.
Remove 3 screws holding pump (small leakage so get a towel).
Remove PUMP from machine. (be observant now)
Remove plastic cover over coil on pump.(its easy)
Thermal switch is soldered between 2 of the now 3 visible terminals. about 7mm x 15mm x 2mm in size
Remove small insulating cover and bend switch up about 30 degrees then flick with fingernail and blow out the dust or rust.
This resets the switch (horray)
Replace insulation on switch and bend back into position gently.
Replace cover over the coil.
Turn pump by hand (resistance should be like pushing 2 small/ medium size magnets together the wrong way)

Return pump to machine and reconnect pumps electrical connections. 2
Reconnect machine to mains (water and electric and waste)
Turn on machine while holding START and SKIP BUTTONS at the SAME TIME.
Leave it off for five mins then turn off and turn on again.
If it does not work straight away RESET again and Repeat as above.
SELECT PROGRAM AND WASH ALL YOUR TROUBLES AWAY.

I hope this helps. WORD

Zanussi WJD1457 E20 FAULT CODE UNIT WILL NOT DRAIN DOWN

I also removed the pump located underneath the unit (For its location follow back the waste pipe inside).Ensure you drain down the unit totally and DISCONNECT the power from the mains (remembering that I will not be held responsable for your actions). Three screws to remove. I found that the impeller had come off the pump shaft. I used epoxy resin for a tempory job, bunged it back in and so far so good !. However I need to locate just an impeller so if any knows where I can purchase one I would be most greatful.
Also......

Zanussi WJD1457 DRYER TIMER FAULT

Another fault that has occured is when it is in drying mode, any drying mode, the timer will count down at five to ten times its normal speed. The unit will no longer dry and I cannot sense any heat from the unit when it has counted down to zero. I have checked all the connectors and removed the motherboard ( EWM2000 ) and ensured all contacts where clean & secured. When I entered the engineer mode (holding down start and skip whilst turning on) on one of the tests is a dryer mode, after ten seconds in this mode the error code E73 flashes?? Has anyone got any pointers??

Thanks

P.S. Judging by this forum, it can't be a good advert for zanussi. (Could it be - "The appliance with no reliance" ).

I was getting the same error message E20. We cleaned out the soap dispenser and cleaned out filter housing at front of machine to no avail. We turned the machine on its side and cleaned out the pump which was clogged up with fluff, now works a treat. Beware don't take off the hose connecting the drum to the filter housing has this was a nightmare to reconnect. Hope this helps.

I had this error, the machine can't empty. I had to get water out through the filter (do while not washer empty;place baking tin under filter; open filter; close when tin full; empty tin;done) until I could open the door and remove the washing. Lay it on it's side, Locate the pump near and below the filter housing, remove the three screws then extract the body of the pump. In my case the impeller was completely choked with fluff. I cleaned it and the filter housing/filter, reassembled then run it empty on the hottest cycle. If you are in a hard water area, add some scalex/fernox/calgon/brewers citric acid. Now works fine. NB this really is a simple DIY job. My machine is 2 yrs old and I clean the filter every 3 months or so - now will do it every month.

I've just been doing some more reading. There are some other conversations about code E90 (communications fault) which I haven't had (yet!). I wonder if a comms problem might manifest itself as this E20 refusal to drain. The solution (from Jason, who's in the know) is to tighten up the connections on the 5-way blue cable between the front panel and the controller.

I also discovered there is an engineers service/reset mode (press start & skip whilst turning on) but know nothing more. I wonder if this will clear the condition and allow the normal drain cycle to be used to empty the machine and restart the wash? I shall try this next time I get E20 - it might be easier than unplumbing the machine.

Jason/Richard, your knowledge would be most helpful!

Ha! It's nice to see I'm not the only one with this problem. My WJD1457W is coming up to two years old and recently started doing this, intermittently, usually at 55 mins or 46 mins to go (on the cotton cycle). I too have checked all pipes and pump operation, everything seems AOK in that department.

The most annoying thing is that the machine is so clever, that even when you turn it off and turn it back on again, and try to do a drain only operation, it stubbornly refuses (not even powering the pump on), until you empty the water by gravity at floor level. This is a poor piece of software design in the controller - if there was a simple way of forcing it to drain, pulling the machine out of it's hole would be unnecessary!

Previous experiences with other machines (and dishwashers)have shown that the pressure switch which detects the water level, or pipe leading to it, are usually the culprits. I have had to clear lots of washing powder gunk from the bottom ends of these pipes in the past, when the symptom is usually overfilling, or continual draining. However, this machine has a wide diameter clear plastic pipe section ("sight glass") connected to the corrugated drum drain hose and the pipes to the pressure switches are connected *above* the highest water level, so there is less chance of blockage. I removed the pressure switches and blowed down the pipes and there didn't seem to be any blockage.

I delved further... there are two pressure switches, one of the conventional type with two or so "clicks" and mechanical 240V contacts which are used to ensure the heating element doesn't come on unless there is a minimum amount of water in there, and I think also controls the maximum fill level and determines when the drain pump should stop (I haven't drawn the wiring diagram yet so I'm not 100% sure, but it's very similar to my other Zanussi machine, see below).

The second pressure switch (the smaller one mounted on a small bracket by the controller) is more interesting. This is an electronic sensor which gives a continuous measurement of pressure as a variable-frequency waveform (you need a scope to see this but beware, the 5V suppy to this sensor is referenced to mains neutral, I think, so you need an isolation transformer). I didn't see a great deal of variation in this during normal operation, the period changing from ~22ms to ~25ms as the machine filled at the start of a cycle. This sensor internally has a variable inductance coil driven at ~40kHZ and uses a PIC micro to convert the signal from the coil into the FM output.

It seesm to me that there isn't very much decoupling on this little PCB and given the electrical noise from the heavy current motor signals which are bundled next to the wires to this sensor might be causing this micro to crash, but I can't prove that yet. I'm wondering whether the fact that the motor brushes are now more worn is introducing more electrical noise into this sensitive circuit? The machine is now interfering more with the radio in the kitchen (it was very bad when the machine was running in during the first few wash cycles).

I assume the continuous measurement of water level is needed for the software algorithm which works out how much water is soaked up and therefore how much laundry is in the machine? What I don't know is: which pressure switch is used by the software to decide if there is water present?

I'm very keen to get to the bottom of this (to keep the missus happy) so any snippets of information most gratefully received. I might try and have a moan at Zanussi, but I don't hold out much hope there. If it is using the second electronic sensor, I reckon some extra supply decoupling might help.

I also own an older Zanussi (1294?) which is very similar inside and has given almost faultless service after being rescued from the neighbours back garden in a half dismantled state. A quick rebuild and a new door seal and it was fine!

I also have *exactly* the same problem with my Zanussi WJD 1667 washer dryer...

To get it to work I have to drain it by getting the hose to floor level to get as much water as possible out.

Would love to know what the problem is.

Simon.

Sounds like your pump has failed. A new one might cost ÂŁ30-ÂŁ40 from spares shop. An engineer might charge a bit more plus ÂŁ60-ÂŁ80 fitting for this.
I once took off my pump and found a hairgrip fouling the innards - it was causing the loss of power. I removed the offending article and it worked ok for a year. It eventually gave up and a replacement wasn't hard to fit.

You say the water drains ok during spin if you hold the hose at ground level....yup, gravity does this for you along with the pressure head of water within the washing machine.

Reason for being here.
My Zanussi is giving E10 error during tumble dry.
Error E10= "inlet blocked." ?
Seems strange cos surely all the dryer requires is a bit of heat and an outlet to drain away the condensed water.
I have checked the inlet pipe and all clear.
Dozy machine, I'm gonna torch it.
