Mercedes 814D rear hubs?

814 Vario year 2000. Had new discs fitted on rear, Main Dealer re-fitted hubs but both hubs bearings failed after few weeks. M/B have modified hubs but dealer put old hubs back on. This has caused a further £2,000 pounds of damage to my brakes. Dealer said not his fault. Anyone know any thing about this problem.

Hello,

K , I am currently doing the discs and pads on the rear of my Vario and I have a problem that you have mentioned! When I put the hub back on I cannot torque the lock nut enough as there is still play in the bearings when the lock nut is tight. I have looked at the lock ring between the 2 bearings and it all looks ok. There is a cutout in one of the locators. Should this somehow be lined up??

Sadly all Mercedes suffer with rear brake problems, before test every year I spend nearly £1000.00 to get the efficiency high enough (drum brakes). Its seems to me the disc brakes are just as bad. Even VOSA testers are used to mercs failing due to low efficiency on rear brakes!

Hi K

Thanks for the reply. Well he fooled M/B This has been going on now for nearly three years, and the French Directors won't act aganst the dealer. I have to take him to court. But I also have to prove he caused the problem hence the questions. Not sure what to do now as I have got to director level at M/B and they just don't care.

i suspect that the problems may have arisen from when they removed hubs, this might have dislodged the inner bearing retaining clip as mentioned in my 1st reply, but they obviously wont admit that they are at fault! you would expect main dealer to know how to remove/check/refit rear hubs as they will have relevant manuals to refer to for checking and over hauling plus all relevant torque figures etc...and if they found anything wrong to have contacted yourself to authorise repairs. as for fitting discs without removing hubs who is he trying to fool!

Thanks for your reply. The main dealer removed and refitted my hubs and over the next few weeks both hubs leaked/failed. This damaged my disks and calipers. The main dealer would not accept responsibility. He would not even acknowledge there was a problem this meant I had to drive my truck with defective brakes over 1000 km to a UK dealer who said your truck is dangerous DUH!! I had told customer service and the dealer before I left for the UK. The dealer said all the problems I told him about must have happened on the way to the UK. Surprise, surprise M/B believe him. Has any one else had a problem with their hubs? and what did your dealer do about it? As I understand the original hub is no longer avaliable because it has been modified. If refitted it may fail. The new hubs are over £400.00 each just for the parts. So if you have a VARIO and need new disks hope you have a lot of cash!!!!! My local professional M/B truck specialist told me he had fitted the new disks without removing the hubs!

on vario the bearing centers are joined together with a split securing ring which holds both bearing centers together, great care must be taken to ensure hub/disc assy is fitted squarely on stub axle or split securing ring will be dislodged, with hub nut still be able to be torqued-up with excess end float in hub .this is usually noticeable by the ammount of threads exposed on stub axle when torqued up.
