HOW CAN I REPLACE THE MAINS CABLE ON A DYSON DC04?

I THINK THE MAINS CABLE IS BROKEN IN THE MACHINE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THING FROM THE PLUG TO THE MOTOR. THIS IS ON A DYSON DC04.

The trick is to get the power button off. But you don't need to crack or break anyhting to do this. The power button is held in place by a little clip that stops it popping out of its socket. To get the button out you need to depress this clip. Access to it is provided by a small slot that you can just see between the button and the main plastic housing. Dyson engineers have a special tool that they put down this slot to release the clip but you don't need one. All you need is a small-bladed screwdriver with a long shaft. With one hand, jam your screwdriver down the slot while wiggling it around, and with your other hand, pull hard up on the button while wiggling it around. The first time it took me a minute or two to get the button out this way, the next time just a few seconds.

Once you have the button out, use the same screwdriver to unscrew the single torque headed screw beneath. You do not need a special torque headed screwdriver. Then it's just a matter of sliding the whole switch and cable assembly upwards and out, and bingo, you've just saved yourself £35 on a Dyson call-out!

Good luck,

Richard

Having found that there was no power and the fuse was OK, I completely dismantled my Dyson as per advuice from others to find that the fault was actually in the moulded plug itself -not internal at all. I cut off the plug and replaced it. Unfortunately to be able to fault-find you need to dismantle the whole machine. It might save time just to cut off the plug and replace it and see if it works. If it doesn't you've wasted a plug but if it does youv'e saved a lot of time. I my opinion there is more likelyhood of a failure at the plug end because of higher stresses than at the reel end.

have a look here : http://www.clayraku.fsnet.co.uk/Dyson/switch.html : it shows you how to take the switch out so you can get to the cable.

Rob Hi,

Not sure if your problem is that there is no power to your machine (i.e. you press the button and nothing happens) or the cable is totally damaged, if its the first please read below;

I have had the power go twice now on my DC04 - the first time I paid to get it fixed (doh)...but the second time I decided to have a go and fix it myself, if you look where the power button is, it is surrounded by moulded plastic(grey, if yours is the purple/green model), now this is the tricky bit, you need to carefully lever this off, it WILL break the grey plastic but it (that you can put back afterwards)should come off in one piece, once this is off you will be able to see what is under the button, you should be able to see a torque head screw holding the button in place, remove this screw using a torque head driver and then look at what the cable is doing, my guess is that the connector has come loose, simply push this back on and put everything back - I think this is caused by standing on the cable when using the machine (great design feature huh!!)
I hope this helps, cracked plastic is worth it, better than paying the repair dude cash anyhow.
