GRANDFATHER CLOCK CHIMING TOO FAST ?

I have just got my gfather clock (Scottish about 1854)running again. The timing is perfect and runs to 5 secs per week but the hour chimes are far too fast. How is the speed of the chime regulated?

Any ideas pse

Many thanks DAve - Yes I have found the vane and watched it carefully over several sets of chimes. It appears that the spindle on which the vane runs is worn where the vane normally sits and in this position the chimes run fast. If I move the vane a few mms along the spindle where it is slightly "fatter" the chimes are perfect. However after a few hours the vane slips down the spindlew into the worn position and the chimes speed up again

Any suggestions as to how to keep the vane in the "fatter" position

Many thanks

Roger

There is normally a vane on the chiming mechanism - a small rectangle of (usually) brass that spins when the chimes work. This spins so fast that its speed is impeded by the air around it and this levels out the speed of the chimes.
