candy fridge freezer, freezer partly working, fridge dead?

There is a lot of gurgling going on with the refridgerator fluid moving round constantly, very noisily, also the temperature control dial at the top of the unit is defective, as sometimes I have to switch power on and off many times to get the motor to kick in. Does anyone have an idea what has gone wrong please?
I have left the unit 8 hours switched off to allow the fluid to settle (the unit has been in a stationary position for several years anyway), and then swithched it back on, the rapid gurgling carries on. ..
