Why does windows live keep shutting down?

Each time I try to open windows live mail and messenger I get a message Windows live communications Platform has encoutered a problem and needs to close. The error signature is as follows Appname:welcomm.exe Appver:14.0.8064.206 ModName:ntdll.dll Modver:5.1.2600.5755 Offset:00100e8 + the following files will be included C;/DOCUME~1/Owner/LOCALS~1/Temp/f8a4_appcompat.txt

I found this...

Windows Live Communications Platform. Background task spawned by Windows Live Messenger when you have Windows Live Contacts (also called Windows Live People) enabled. "Windows Live Contacts" is the ability of your Windows Live address book to be updated in realtime when your friends update their own Windows Live information (ie. they've changed their cell phone number, or they've moved home, etc...), and vice versa when you update your own Windows Live profile and you have configured some or all of your friends to automatically receive your updated details.

And this....

Description: wlcomm.exe is located in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files". Known file sizes on Windows XP are 19,456 bytes (66% of all occurrence), 30,752 bytes.
The program is not visible. You can uninstall this program in the control panel. wlcomm.exe is not a Windows core file. Therefore the technical security rating is 30% dangerous.

.......

I would delete the programme - clean the registry - use SpybotSearch & Destroy and Priform's CCleaner to respectively look for malware and tidy the registry (both free) and make a decision about the wisdom of permitting people anywhere updating my computer without my knowledge.

But then - I'm not a social networking kind of person.

Good luck...
