Canon FC220 Photocopier?

I have a Canon FC220 Photocopier and despite recently replacing the cartridge with a Canon E30, it is still necessary to switch off the auto exposure 'A' and set the exposure adjustment dial manually to about 5 before a reasonable photocopy is achieved. The exposure recalibration switch is set to the darkest setting. The new cartridge has been shaken as per instructions.
This can't be right, can anyone help please.
