How to remove drip tray at back of fridgefreezer?

A pot of cream has leaked down the drainage hole from the fridge compartment to the tray at the bottom of the fridgefreezer. It smells pretty bad and we're trying to remove the tray to clean it, but it seems to be attached by a metal component....how can I remove the tray?

I had this problem. It wasn't at all clear how to get the drip tray or drain pan out, or whether it came out at all. Looking underneath, there was a pad of black styrofoam-y material which made me think it might be kind of glued in place.

So I first got as much of the smelly water out using a turkey baster with a handy bit of thin plastic tubing taped on its end to make a long, flexible nozzle. You could make one out of gaffa tape - after all, you're going to lob it away afterwards!

Then a bit of combined wiggling and gentle pulling and out it came, there was a small, horizontal, forward-facing (i.e. away from me, looking in at the back opf the fridge) plastic peg that fitted into a plastic socket mounted on top of the compressor. the styrofoam pad was there to add a bit of friction, I think, for a tight fit.

The rest was easy: clean, throw away all contaminated stuff, refit, shower, well-deserved cold beer. Didn't have to switch off fridge; no electrical work involved - though if I couldn't have sucked up the water first, I'd have unplugged, in case of spillage.
