We've just had a similar problem and found the solution to be somewhat embarrassing! The brush control button, usually a separate button on the cleaning head of the machine, works as an "on/off" function... ie, whilst the machine is in its upright position, press on the brush control button til you hear it click. Switch on the machine and try cleaning as normal, the brush may not work, in which case, put the machine back to upright position and repeat the process, the brush should start up. If that doesn't work - I'm afraid it might be a call to the engineer. Hope this helps.
