Stupid shape center columns!!!!!?

I have a 1996 mk4 fiesta which needs either a cd disk changer (which I can't get for love nor money) or a new center column which you can fit a standard head unit into. As the column is a stupid shape this is wearing my patients very thin as no one knows what to do. Please help, this is meant to be a pressie for xmas and the missus will kill me if I don't get it for her.!!
