router problem-viewing internet?

Problems with router/internet connection-Cannot view webpages?

Hi, I posted on this site a couple of weeks ago (Terry-thanks for your advice) but I have still not managed to get my router functioning properly. I set up my belkin router and my laptop is telling me that I am connected to the internet via this router,with an excellent signal. The problem is when I try to use the internet, view webpages,or log in to msn (basically do anything with the net). I have been doing various searches on the net to try and troubleshoot but need help. Msn messenger troubleshooter flags up a default gateway error, yesterday it said dns error and also proxy settings!!! Could anyone liaise with me to try and solve this one? Thanks.

You may have disturbed some factory settings in your router when you were mucking around with it. Try resetting it to factory settoings - having made a note of your logon ID and password or course. :-)

Alternatively go into the "WAN Settings" of your router and try putting www.dynDNS.org In the bit that asks you for a DNS server.

As to the proxy settings try going intro the connection settings of your browser and choose 'automatically detect proxy settings for this network'.

Most of this type of thing is set as default so in future when things don't work, and you fiddle around with settings make a note of what you have done and then you can put them back where you found them.

thanks for your advice but the plot thickens. Basically I took the said router back as I could not for the life of me get it going. I have changed it for a linksys one.
When I access the internet normally using a usb cable into my laptop, I have no problems accessing the internet. When I was setting up the router and testing my internet connection as per the router instructions, there were problems. As you know when setting up a router you have to use an ethernet cable. Well the internet signal was limited or no connectivity. I called telewest whose advice was to turn off the modem for 5 mins then retry. I did this and got enough signal to complete the router installation.
So now the router appears to be working fine, but the problem seems to be with my pc's settings, as I now suspect was the prob all along.
I turn on wifi and it picks up an excellent signal from my router, but I am still unable to connect to the internet using the router, hence am writing this msg while linked to the modem via usb. Very very vexed now!!!!!!!!!

First of all the modem has nothing to do with your PC being able to talk to the router. That is a completely separate piece of connectivity. Plug your PC into the router with an Ethernet cable (they are often supplied with the router.) You are looking for a DOWNSTEAM port - usually four of them. Your PC should be able to display the setup pages of the router. They are in the router's manual but often start with 192.168.0.1 as the URL in a browser page.

Once you have that working. Plug the modem into the router via another Ethernet cable into a port that may say WAN or upstream or similar. Give the modem a minute or two to synchronise an then look at the WAN connectively pages of your router. The statistics should help you decide if your modem is bad.

I am with blueyonder/telewest. I have a motorola surfboard modem which was supplied by Telewest. I currently have to use a USB cable connected to the modem in order to connect to the internet (other end connected to PC). The modem usually works ok when connected to the PC with a USB cable, but there has been a few occasions where I have had a system message saying limited or no connectivity, and have not been able to access the internet. On these occasions, I have called Telewest, whose advice was to disconnect the power from the modem, wait a few minutes then reconnect the power to rectify the problem.
When trying to use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet instead of the USB,there is ALWAYS an system/error message saying that there is limited or no connectivity. I have then turned the modem off and on as directed by Telewest, and this has fixed the problem only temporarily.
I managed to get enough of a signal to set up the router correctly, and now my PC detects the router, and appears to be connected to it, yet I can still not view any webpages. Thus in order to connect to the net I have to be connected to the modem via USB. I'm beginning to think that the problem may lie completely with the modem - what do you think?

Rather than keep fgoing round the houses, it would REALLY help if you were to post what you setup is? As you are with Telewest I guess that you have a cable modem? Not Broadband va your telephone line?

The modem works OK when plugged to the PC via USB as you have said. Do you use the same modem for the router?

You appear not to be able to get your PC to even talk to the router?

When you have posted your setup I'll try again.
