To repair Sony VAIO damaged by reversed polarity charger?

The wrong polarity DC power was plugged in; something went "pop". Looking at the circuit board, it appears the copper track from the power input socket burnt out; there are two subminiature fuses which appear unaffected, likewise two diodes, so far as they can be tested without removing them. Also the torroidal smoothing coil on the +ve and -ve lines is OK. However, I have repaired the break in the copper track so that power goes to that coil (the diode between the +ve and -ve coils evidently works), but the computer does not turn on.

I did the same mistake but noting on the motherboard seemed to be damaged. My Vaio model is VPCF1290X.

So the computer was not booting and the only thing giving me hope that I still can save my laptop was that the power button light was flashing.

I just unpluged the motherboard battery (the one that keeps the BIOS memory alive) for 1 minute and after that I put it back.

After that I tried to boot the laptop and surprisingly everything was fine.

Good luck

:( Sory, but that computer is DEAD! :(

You sent current the wrong way, it shorted, and totaly destroyed, some IC circuits, that short caused the coper track to melt.
The ironic thing is that the ICs protected the 2 fuses while getting destroyed...
You corrected only a single, secondary and the only visible, symptom.

Final verdict: several ICs are blown, extremely possibly including the CPU and some part of the BIOS. Your RAM may also be damaged beyong repair: Don't even think plugging it in another computer, EVER. Doing so entail the risk of also destroying that other computer.

With some luck, the hard drive did survive and your saved datas could be recovered, but you need to use another computer for that.

Other parts that MAY be salvaged: The monitor, the keyboard, the tracking device, any external devices connected to an USB port.
