Hi Barbara,
You can use the oil on the moving parts but as there was grease on it before it's probably best to replace it.
Something like Vaseline should do. Apply it where it was before, especially on the parts that turn, metal on metal. A thin smear on the cogs that turn with the timing belt should be enough there. The important thing is to get everything running freely.
Also make sure the underside of the carriage is clean and freshly oiled and that when you push in the cam buttons and turn the change knob the appropriate cams move.
Hope you get it patterning soon.

Hi Barbara,
Check that the machine is clean inside, under the needle channels. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out as much as possible. Fibres can build up and need cleaning out every so often.
To clean the timing belt cogs, you can remove the plastic covers at the back of the machine. Check that the timing belt is not damaged and is turning freely.
Also make sure the punchcard mechanism is working freely. You will probably need to re-grease various parts. Then before you replace the plastic covers, insert a punchcard and check the selecting mechanism. You should be able to see if it is selecting properly. Take the punchcard out before you replace the covers.
Hope this helps.
