Why will my Polti easy steam not heat up?

I have only used this machine once or twice about a year ago and I have now just tried to use it again. I have put in a litre of water and plugged it in. The ON switch lights up but I am waiting and waiting... for the ready light to come on, but to no avail. What could be the matter with it?
