Petrol light showing although the tank is half full?

Hi we have a renault megan scenic 2001 plate 1600 petrol engine. The petrol light has come on even though the tank is half full. we have notice over the last few days that the car seemed to be using more petrol, now the light has come on. Any ideas how to correct this
