More memory WILL speed things up by reducing the access to the page file.
Right now, it's slow because it waiting a LOT while writing and reading from the disk whitch is over 1000 times slower that your RAM.

If you can go up to 3 Gb or even 4 Gb, you'll realy see the difference.

If you have less that 3 Gb or RAM, Chrome will kill you as it use an insane amount of memory. Firefox is MUCH more frugal.

The disconnect addon is prety useless.

AdBlock plus is a must! Available for Firefox, Chrome, Internet explorer and maybe Opera.

Defragmenting is great for conventional drives, but deadly for SSDs. To be performed at LEAST every month!

Pruning the processes to much can make your computer totaly unuseable.
Instead, I recomend installing CCleaner and run it occasionaly. It's great at finding and safely removing useless and obsolete temporary files that thend to clutter your drive.

Uninstall obsolete and no longer used applications.

Check at what applications start up with Windows. Disable those that you don't realy need. If you have over 10..15 items in the notification area, you probably have to many.

NEVER EVER have more that a single anti-virus active at the same time. Any anti-virus installed beside the primary one must be set to only scan on demand.
Several anti-virus active at the same time just waste time by scanning everything several times and competing for the available resources.

More memory will not speed up the machine.

It runs as fast as it ever did - it will very probably be doing more unnecessary things and responding more slowly.

Do housekeeping first and then think about adding more memory.

Make friends with Task Manager - see what processes are eating up the machine's resources - prune the start up list completely. Consider Google Chrome as your browser - consider DISCONNECT and ADBLOCK PLUS.

Defragment (defrag) the machine's disk every five years.
