Flush button not working water bypassing cystern?

After flush ok this morning water started going continuous into the toilet bowl, Cystiern/tank ? not filling up flush button stopped working, search internet all morning for answer, found you and as recommended by first answer on page bought WD40 unclipped box only and filled hole with WD40, it is now working perfect. Many thanks for the information
