If you've a spark(and most neglected engines will have)then the most likely cause of bad starting or consequent stopping will be found in the carburettor , clean out the carb and most engines will start first pull !! Just make sure the fuel and tank inside and the jets are all CLEAN.

There is a cheap solution. Since the evolution of the cheap steel deck rotary mower there are an increasing number of mowers with rotten decks but good briggs engines. I buy these for £5 a go, just for the ignition units which I fit onto old horizontal crank rotavator engines. No adjustments are required just cut the old wires off, bolt the new ignition on and conect the earth stop lead. Never fails to get a reliable spark.

Hi
Just finished decoking and regrinding the valves on a very old Norlett (I think they are all very old now) and wish to replace the points and condenser as the spark is weak.
How can the flywheel be removed without a puller? A copy of a handbook would be great.
Can be contacted on ivorastle@tiscali.co.uk
Thanks

Hi Jane
I have similar problems with a Norlett Rotovator. I have de-coked it and ground in the valves as a start to a full refurb.but new points and condenser are needed. I am unable to remove the flywheel so would like some advice please. A copy of the handbook/disc would be great.

I'm going to assume that your machine is fairly old. Almost certainly it is not the spark plug but the ignition that is the problem. You probably have a Briggs & Stratton engine and they have a conversion kit to replace it with electronic ignition. The part # is 394970 and referred to as a "Magnetron retro-fit kit". This is pretty easy to install (ignore the instructions to remove the fly wheel), although the diagrams are not exactly wonderful. You can go to Briggs & Stratton's web site to see what this looks like.

I bought an old Briggs & Stratton rotovator off eBay and after a bit of research found that you can download original user manuals and parts manuals from the Briggs & Stratton website by typing the Engine Seriel No (located on a sticker on the side of the engine) into http://www.briggsandstratton.com It also gives you info about when it was made (mine was from Feb 1979!!!). Thought this info might be useful to those looking for manuals.

I have recently purchased a norlett with no spark. I had to take off the flywheel which is under the pull start assembly. It came off without the aid of a flywheel puller. I cleaned up the points which were corroded also freed up the small push rod that makes the points open and close. I had a problem with the flywheel key when assembling. i put a new key in after grinding it a bit and completed the assembly. It runs now so i would think your problem is the same as mine was.

Hi

This problem has now been sorted, with new pully spring etc. Luckily a friend sorted this for us.
I now have a handbook if anyone wants a copy.

I'm guessing the engine is a Briggs and Stratton. If so the spark plugs tend to be all the same for the small engines. I can't remember the part number but places like B and Q normally have them on display near the lawn mowers and accessories - there is usually only one type so it should be the correct one. If the current spark plug looks OK'ish, the problem probably lies with either the points and/or condenser fitted under the flywheel. It is not unusual for these to need a bit of attention, especially if the engine is old.
A useful tip for machines like this is to either use fresh petrol or add Briggs and Stratton 'Fuel Fit' to you petrol can, because modern fuel goes stale very quickly and can cause starting problems. However this won't cure a lack of spark!
There is a Briggs and Stratton book/CD covering repair and maintenance of these engines, and they often appear second hand on ebay, or for a bit more money you can buy a new one.

Good luck.

Matt.
