Kenwood A901 smoke problem?

Hi

Following on the previous question and reply on this subject.....ie white smoke from machine you said capacitors and resistors could be blown.

Can the capacitors and resistors be easily replaced?

I am in the process of getting the parts together to fix my A901.

When it comes to the resistors Kenwood recommends that they should be 2 watt.

Thanks to all who contributed to the above answer. Note that a 0.15uF capacitor can be made up by using a 0.1uF capacitor in parallel with a 0.047uF capcacitor. I haven't tried yet it but it looks as though there is enough space for 2 components. 'In parallel' means that both capacitors have both legs connected to the connection points on the PCB - ie one is piggy-backed on the other.

There are several threads about this (Google is your friend).

I'm just about to overhaul mine.

I think the Maplin components (codes) are as follows:

Capacitors (this type are original http://www.evox-rifa.com/cap_catalog/emisuppr/pme271m.pdf) Maplin closest appear to be:
0.15uF (0.1uF should be ok N69CN)
0.047uF (N68CN)
Resistors
220R 1/4W (M220R)
56R 1/4W (M56R)
Triac
BTA08-600B (UK54J)

Total cost as of day of post is £2.56 plus p&p

I'm not sure if the capacitor's legs are long enough for direct replacement but as the whole caboodle is less than the cost of a single capacitor elsewhere I'll take the risk and solder wires on if necessary!

If anyone else has had success with other Maplin components perhaps they could post here with the relevant codes - there appears to be mention on the forums but no one has threaded the codes apart from that of the triac.

I just had this problem on my A901, I took off the motor casing (first remove the screws holding the lock slide guide) and immediately saw the problem - capacitor in bits and resistor burnt. Besides basic tools, looks like all you need is a soldering iron and some solder. Probably any electrical engineer or handy DIYer could do it. I'll get the parts - do you need parts? - I am getting 5 capacitors so will have some spare.
