how can i change the fuse in my panasonic microwave, model nn-s953wf?

how can i change the fuse in my panasonic microwave, model nn-s953wf?

the power went out on my microwave after a power surge. i have confirmed that the outlet has electricity. the last time this happened, a repair service changed the fuse and charged me a lot for the repair. i would like to change the fuse myself this time.

How much do Panasonic charge for one of their engineers to call on you

These fuses are available from most Maplin stores. If marked as T2 for example, the board may say 'special fuse' this means that it is a slow blow fuse. I managed to buy a packet of 10 identical fuses for under a fiver.
Sadly, this did not cure my problem and the fuse went again suggesting a fault elsewhere. I suggest that it would be worthwhile trying a new fuse if the old fuse is open circuit, as several blogs here and elsewhere say it cured the problem . If it blows again it is no point replacing the fuse a second time without curing the underlying fault

I cannot find any id on mine. It has a 4 -5 digit number on the base plate. No id on the back except a warning about removing the cover.
Its a simple crosshead screwdriver to remove the screws or fastenings?

When you say "the power went out." What do you mean?

I have jsut bought a used panasonic microwave in lovely condition but when i pluggged it in [ after travelling 120 miles home] it will not go via the start microswitch. However everything else works..the timers and all the other microprocesing switches on the interface. Just cannot start it. I thought it may be a door hinge shut out maybe but tried holding door ophysically shut while pressing start button.
Someone said it may be a fuse.
Source of Microwave was a good home but in slightly rural area of Pareora that may have power surges in Timaru Area of New Zealand.
So when you say ' the power went out ', what do you mean and I dont expect an answer after your posting 4 years ago.

Yep, Panasonic had NO power also. Changed with a 20a fuse and it's all good. No problem.

Hi,

A quick comment for Dick Kapash: Did the 20a fuse solve your problem? I have a Panasonic S943 that just blew its fuse. Don't know what caused the fuse to blow. I located a 15a ABC fuse, installed it and it blew instantly. Seems to be a problem with panasonic microwaves as I read through the web.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I did not have an identical replacement fuse so I used a 20A automobile fuse and the microwave has worked perfectly for the past month. The difference between 18a (original) and my 20a replacement is so minimal that there is very little chance of the fuse damaging the unit. Almost all electronic components are not specified to better than 10% anyway.
Most hardware stores carry size 15 Security Torx bits - which is neede to remove the cover. Be sure the unit is unpluged!!

A note to howtomendit.com and Mr. Mehta -

Thank you for saving me $100 on a new microwave.

Thanks for the advice Mr. Mehta. I was not able to find the exact tool to remove the cover screws, so I used a pair of pliers and removed them slowly.

As for the fuse, it is an 18amp ceramic, which no parts places carry. I went to a microwave repair shop with the old fuse. They typically don't sell parts but agreed to sell me a few fuses for my Panasonic.

I had a similar problem this weekend with our Panasonic nn-s963bf. I opened the cover - you'll need a six lob driver to open the back screws - and the fuse is readily visible on the top. For my model the fuse has a 250V 18A rating. I couldn't find a 18A fuse so for now I've replaced it with a 250V 15A version. Hope that helps.
