Presuming you are using WinXP (more so professional than Home) - it may also be worth right clicking on the DVD-RW icon under My Computer > Properties > recording and check "Enable Recording on this drive"

This could be a number of reasons, some dvd rw dont like some type of disks might be worth trying other brands of disk, another reason may be your lazer is in need of a clean or the firmware may need updating or worse case your writer is on its way out
