How can I fix a pc's dvd burner?

Hi, I have a pc with a dvd burner. The problem is that now it can burn a dvd but not a cd!!! I have searched the web and found out that the thing could be that the laser lense isn't calibrated any more. If it is this, I'd like to know how to calibrate it.
I have a Lite On dvd burner.
Thank you very much. Guillermo form Uruguay.

Hola Guillermo - the DVD burner should be able to burn either a DVD or a CD. Is there a second drive in your computer. I suspect so. The problem is the jumper settings. One drive must be set as the Master and the second drive as a Slave. Then the computer can recognize both of them. The jumpers are located on the back of the drive next to the ribbon cable plug. There should be a diagram on the front of the drive that tells you how to set the jumper. The existing drive is probably already set at the master so the DVD drive should be set as the "slave". It will not affect how it works. If you have problems with the email me at shopbruce@gmail.com and we'll see if we can get it working properly for you. Hope this helps.

What is your operating system XP or Vista. In XP you have to enable the drive to write to CD.

You can burn a CD because CDs and DVDs use a different laser. Assuming that your burning software is OK (you don't give much information about the problem) then try cleaning your DVD driver. If that fails then the usual repair method is to replace the whole drive.
