WHERE IS THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING?

I HAVE A 1987 MERCRUISER 470 AND CANNOT FIND THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING..AND MY OTHER QUESTION IS WHERE DOES THE BOAT PICK UP WATER FROM THE OUTDRIVE TO KEEP THE ENGINE COOL..PLEASE IF U HAVE ANY ANSWERS WRITE ME AT SPINBOY112@SBCGLOBAL.NET
