can anyone tell me what this symbol means?

A car with a spanner through the middle on a vauxhall zafira. I had trouble starting it today, it was turning over but didn't start up until about the third appempt. The revs were running high & I had no power from the gas, there was a symbol on the dash of a car with a spanner through it. Turned engine off & restarted & all was ok. Any ideas what may have caused this??
