How to Fix my hotpoint Aircon?

On the Aircon i have red light "pre.Def" and it cuts out what ever function i put in e.g. when i try to heat the room up? how can i fix this very cold in winter?

when you go into heating mode , any air con system will do two things. First , it will possibly go into defrost , depending on coil temp. then it will gointo "pre heat " outdoor unit will run but indoor unit fan will stay off. it will try and achieve a coil temp of more than 40 deg c before switching on fan. you need patience with air con, think of it as a woman. they are their to test our patience!!

the purpose of the defrost is to stop hot gas entering frozen pipes. the pre heat defrost light will go of when the evaporator coil warms to a certain temp. your problem is likely to be a coil sensor or refrigerant loss.
