engine trouble?

my nissan serena was going well except for throwing out thick black smoke yesterday was driving when i heard a few squeaks then a knocking noise from engine. she still starts and drives but there is a knocking noise that sounds quite bad. i am broke and car-less can you advise me what it might be PLEASE
