Hotpoint Aquarius TDL30 over heating. HELP!!!!?

My Hotpoint Aquarius TDL30 seems to be over heating? When switched on I can see the element glowing bright red through the back of the drum and there is a lot of smoke. What could be causing this? Can anyone help?
