turns out my liquid soap has been causing problems
found this stuff - new from america , i got mine on ebay

if anyone wants the product try ebay item 280647325306 thats what we got and it seems to be working ok .. theres a video on the listing which explains smell issues ..

Several on here suggest this is caused by bugs in the machine developing over time because of constant low temperature washes. They recommend a very hot wash with a cup of bleach twice a year and to leave the door open when not using so to dry out properly.

The smell from our W/M turned out to be from the final drain pipe at the back caused by blocked house drains.
