How should I connect the blade brake solenoid into the motor circuit?

The blade brake on my B&D Stripemaster came apart and disconnected all the connections from the two way connector strip.I have a line from the switch and a line to the motor,and two wires from the brake solenoid plus a diode.Do I need to connect the solenoid in series with the motor and what about the diode.
