it goes one direction then the other
it starts making a rrrrrrrr noise and the drum stops
we have to stop the machine

If the drum moves freely by hand with the machine off and the noise heard when the motion stops is not loud then it may be the motor brushes as motors make rrrr noise when brushes are worn but check belt, pulleys etc first.
If a motor stops then a light tap on it side may start it again confirming the brushes theory.
