Beko Washing Machine Filter Cleaning?

When my washing machine does not drain the water at the end of a wash I have to clean the filter and then it's OK.
However the filter itself does not put right out of the machine. Once I unscrew it and pull it, it only goes so far and I have to try and pull all the stuff out using a knife of putting my fingers in and pulling what I can out. It is very fiddly and scrapes fingers. Should the filter come right out of the machine?
