my lx 255 john deere wont start it turns over but won't stay running?

unplug the external wire from the bottom of the carburetor bowl and unscrew the switch from the bottom of the carburetor and let the bowl drain and then put the switch and wire back in. Because it sounds like you might have water or moisture in the bottom of the carb bowl. Also you might want to check the bottom of the gas tank to make sure there is not water on the bottom of the tank.
