How can I fix the E32 problem with Sharp ER-A440?

I have done a master reset - so the memory is cleared and keyboard is back to default layout (I believe).

Unfortunately, I only have the User manual, not the Dealer manual for that register so I don't have the procedure to check the key assignments.

As far as the battery, yes there is a small nickel-metal hydride battery on the main board. If you feel up to taking the cover off the register and checking it, the battery should be between 3 - 4V when the register is unplugged. I have seen marginal batteries cause some strange symptoms, so it's hard to say for sure if it's a factor here.

I followed the service manual to perform master reset. (I did modify a master key to become a service key for SRV and SRV' turnings). The printer did print master reset after I did that.
That key was allocated for # key. After the reset I believe it should be CASH# now. Is there a way to check the keys?
Does the ECR have back up battery? If it has would it play up when the battery is low or flat?

Puzzling ...
When you say you did a master reset - did you turn the key to SRV2, hold the Journal Feed key down, turn the key to SRV1? If so, that should set the keyboard back to the default layout.

Is the CASH# key on your keyboard physically located on the left half of the keyboard, top row, third from the left?

Thanks Steve. I have tried that.
I tried 2 ways:
1)At Reg mode or OP mode, I could enter 1 but then pressing CASH# gave E32.
2)At Reg mode, Pressing CASH#, then 1, then CASH# - this also gave E32.

I believe the E32 error is saying you need to sign in a clerk. You can do this by entering a 1 and then pressing the CASH # key.
