My Laptop Keeps Turning Itself Off Before It's Even Loaded Up?

4 days ago I turned my laptop off for the night as normal. When I tried to load it up again the next morning it switched itself off before it had started up. I have tried running startup repair but it always switches itself off before it has a chance to actually repair the problem. I have also tried starting it up normally, at which point it checks for inconsistencies on my hard drive and tries to fix the problem, but again it never gets very far before it turns itself off again.

It is a Sony Vaio laptop. When it turns itself off it makes the sound that it would usually make if you forced it to shut down via the power button.

I have racked my brains but can't think of anything that could have caused this problem. I have not recently downloaded or installed any new software, or installed any new hardware. I have antivirus software on my computer and always scan anything I'm thinking of downloading, I haven't had any warning messages when visiting websites. My antivirus program scans my computer every day and didn't find anything the last day it was working properly. I haven't dropped my laptop or knocked it, I just can't think of a solution.

I am writing this on a relative's computer, but it is very important that I get mine working again. It is my only computer and I am starting an Open University degree in a few weeks, so it really is vital.

Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Lexi.

Sounds stupid but I had the same problem because I had the fan blocked by cover in bed lol. It shuts itself off so it doesn't do any damage due to overheating

In my opinion it is heat related. You have to clean the heat sink fan and if you can do it you can change the thermal paste of the heat sink because if it dry it will accumulate the heat and the laptop will switch off for safety.

when u boot up, hold either f2 or delete, enter setup and turn off any settings that say the the cpu is monitored for temp, then restart the pc whilst pressing f8, then enter safe mode, this will load windows with minimum drivers for diagnostics. then just do a system restore about 7 days previous is good. Failing that the graphics chip is at fault. if its vista change the theme from aero to classic, it uses far less resources and wont get so hot

Don't know - might be a power related problem - might be a failure with a detection circuit - I stopped working actively on computers around 1983 - things move on but they don't change that much - I think your fault is heat related but that does not necessarily mean that YOU will be able to detect the heat - just the component that's going wrong.

Continuing good luck...

Thanks Peccavi. Is this still likely to be the case even if my laptop doesn't feel at all hot? Lexi.

It may well have a warm-up fault. As the machine warms up a heat related fault condition is detedted as an error - bad power or over temperature perhaps - and it automatically begins a controlled shut down. If left to itself the machine might die in an uncontrolled way, for instance half way through writing a block of data on the disk. A controlled shutdown preserves the integrity of files on the disk.

You may have to send your machine in for technical diagnosis and repair - or invest in a new one.

Good luck...
