Washing machine smell?

I Have a Hotpoint WD72 washer dryer and recently there seems to be a lot of bits (like tissue but there is no tissue in the machine) on the clothes it has washed and now they are starting to come out with a smell of stale water and the machine smells also.
Is there a filter I can check somewhere?
