sunbeam t-20 keeps cooking?

Toast goes down,stays down cooks it real good, and black! Have unit apart watch how darkness knob will make the points separate? Do i want the points open with out any toast in slot?? I understand some things about the toaster but I am puzzled at how it wooks

I had the same problem. After taking the toaster apart, when it came time to put the screw for the temp knob, I screwed the post all the way down and then backed it off and tested it one rotation at a time. To screw the post back in, go counter clockwise, vice versa for removal. Put it back together (a pain)and attatch the knob. Voila
