How do I remove the wing nut that houses the pump, impellers, strainer, etc?

I can't get the wing nut off of the housing that encloses the strainer, impellers, and sprinklers. It turns but does not come out. Seems that the entire unit is turning as I turn the wing nut.
The dishwasher is a Kenmore ultra Wash, model 665 16364300 and is about six years old. I am trying to remove the strainer to clean it. The top dish tray does not receive any water.
