I have filled the filter cartridge with simple sponge and am happily using the steam iron with no problems. I live in an area which does not suffer badly from limescale problems and of course, I cannot vouch for the safety or efficient operation of the iron, but because of the price of filters, for me, it was a choice of buy a new iron or make do.

I have a similar Steamworks iron - my most recent filters wore out in a matter of a few weeks, discharging brown goo on to a white shirt. The iron was good value and has worked well, but the filters make it expensive for me to maintain.
As I do not live in an area with hard water I'm wondering if I can replace the contents on the filter with dense sponge and continue to use it?

I can answer this question...
how can I mend the steam iron filter, or clean it to reuse?
