Trition shower hot then cold, now water coming from overflow?

My Triton shower (Ivory III) was running really hot then cold and repeating this cycle about every 30 seconds everytime it was used last week. This week, the pressure has dramtically dropped and there is very little water coming from the shower head and it is now pouring out of the overflow at the bottom of the shower unit. Does anyone know what might be causing these problems and whether they are likely to be linked? If so, then what needs to be done to fix them? Will I need a plumber or can I do this myself?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Hi

The overflow is actully the outlet pipe for the pressure relief device. This is known as the PRD and it will only vent water if there has been an overpressure situation inside the heater tank. The hot/cold cycling situation you described is the likely precurser to the PRD opening up. Are you in a hard water area because the heater tank may be furred up causing a reduction in water flow through the heater tank and this may have caused a pressure build up inside the heater tank.
You will need an engineer visit to check the shower.
