Protron mod# PDV-288 portable dvd player doesn't work in the car?

protron DVD player doesn't work in the car? We have tried with the adapter nothing happens?? We have tried charging the battery pack at home before we left. that only held power for 1- 20 min. session? Do you suggest a different adapter? or a new battery pack? if so where do we get them?
